McCrary advances to regional competition

Troy’s Griff McCrary placed second in the Master’s Drive Chip and Putt competition Monday, earning a berth to the regionals in Augusta, Ga.

“He did really well,” said Collin McCrary, Griff’s father.

“He had tried the last two years to qualify, but barely missed it …

“This year, he turned 14 two weeks ago and moved up to the 14- and 15-year-old boys age group, so we weren’t expecting much.”

Griff competed against 18 others in his age group in Columbus, Ga., and finished second in overall points. “He did really well. He was just pounding it off the tee today,” Collin said.

Griff will compete Aug. 20 in the regionals at Augusta Country Club. The top finishers there will advance to the finals at Pinehurst, and the top finishers will compete on the Sunday before play opens at the Master’s.
