Colley Complex hosting lunchtime cinema during summer

The Colley Senior Complex is not an IMAX theater. It’s something even better.
Just ask the ladies who had lunch and a movie at the “Colley Cinema” Monday.
The Colley Senior Complex opened its summer lunch and a movie series with what, Complex Director Catherine Jordan said is a movie classic, “Steel Magnolias.”
“When we realized that a lot of our members hadn’t seen ‘Steel Magnolias,’ we decided they’ve got to see it,” Jordan said. “The movie came out in 1989 and it’s been on television a thousand time. It’s a must see.”
In February, the senior center sponsored a trip to the Wetumpka Depot Playhouse to see the classic performed on stage. Those who missed the trip were disappointed and those who saw the play, wanted to see the movie.
“‘Steel Magnolias’ was the best movie to start our summer movie series,” Jordan said. “If you haven’t seen it, you need to. If you have seen it, you’ll want to see it again and again.”
Jordan said she and her staff are always looking for new programs and activities for the city’s senior center and a summer movie series seemed made to order.
“When it’s hot outside, lunch and a movie is a good way to spend a couple of hours,” Jordan said. “We had 23 ladies for ‘Steel Magnolias.’”
Jordan said the ladies had a good laugh, a good cry and a good time.
“We’ll have more great movies in July and August,” she said. “We’ll show ‘War Room’ in July. August is to be announced.”
The Colley Senior Complex summer agenda is brimming full.
On Thursday, the bus is headed north to the Peach Park at Clanton for peaches and ice cream. On June 23, all seniors are invited to grab their cane poles and a can of worms and enjoy fishing at newly opened Pike County Lake.
“We’re going to have a day of fishing and a picnic and everyone who likes to fish, picnic or a day outdoors is invited,” Jordan said. “On June 29, we’ll celebrate the one-year anniversary of our Potter’s House and everyone is invited to come out and see the beautiful work our potters are doing.”
July will be a busy month, with a Fourth of July cookout and dance on July 2 and dances on the first and third Saturdays of the month.
The senior center will sponsor trips to “The Beauty and the Beast” at the Shakespeare Festival on July 14, “Calendar Girl” at the Wetumpka Depot on July 21 and “Oklahoma” at Faulkner University on July 28.
August offerings will include “Marooned on Madagascar” at the Enterprise Dinner Theater, a tour of Jasmine Hill Gardens and a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina or Savannah, Ga.
“We’ll start 2017 off in a big way with a cruise out of Mobile,” Jordan said.
“We’ve got a lot planned. We invite our seniors to call 808-8500 for more information or stop by the Colley Senior Complex on Elm Street and find out more about our trips and the programs that are offered throughout the year.”
