First Baptist Church of Troy’s Vacation Bible School was in full swing Tuesday, with some 160 youngsters participating in various activities.

Children’s Minister Anela Culpepper said the church and the 70 volunteers helping with the VBS love the children and are excited to have the opportunity to reach out and share the love of God with them.

This year’s VBS theme is “Ocean Commotion,” a curriculum based on Noah and the flood.

“The kids are learning about God using Noah,” said Culpepper. “They’re learning how he trusted and obeyed God even if he didn’t understand what was going on, and how they can do the same thing.”

Culpepper said that the church is also using the beach theme to teach the children that God is a “lifesaver.” Over the course of the week, she said students will learn about how to stand for, trust, obey, thank and fear God. She said she chose the program because of its clear presentation of the gospel and its Biblical grounding.

The curriculum, provided by the Christian organization Answers in Genesis, coincides with the organization’s unveiling of the Ark Encounter this summer in Williamstown, Kentucky. The VBS includes many of the organization’s answers on exactly how big the ark was and how the flood occurred and its effect on the world.
