Hydock returning for June Buggin’

When the carpenter bees are out and the spider lilies bloom, that’s a sign that it’s soon to be June Buggin’ Time at the We Piddle Around Theater in Brundidge.
Each June, the Brundidge Historical Society hosts an event that is as unpredictable and magical as the flight of a June bug.
“Years ago, children would catch June bugs, tie a string around one of their legs and let them fly,” said Mernette Bray, a member of the BHS storytelling committee. “You never knew where they would fly or how high. But it was always an amazing thing to see.”
And, that’s the idea behind June Buggin’ at the We Piddle Around Theater.
“You never know what June Buggin’ will be but it’s always magical,” Bray said. “This year will be especially magical because nationally acclaimed storyteller Dolores Hydock will back piddlin’ around with us.
Hydock left Pennsylvania as a college student to study the folklore of Sand Mountain and never went back.
“Dolores is a wonderful storyteller and she has been a featured teller at our Pike Piddlers Storytelling Festival,” Bray said. “She and Bobby Horton did a heart-warming and memorable Chili Country Christmas storytelling event for us and she’s a return June Bugger. We are excited to have her back for our June Buggin’Luncheon on Thursday, June 16 at the We Piddle Around Theater.”
Hydock will be featured in “Close Encounters of the Storytelling Kind.”
Bray said a wise person once said “The best part of an adventure is people you meet along the way.”
“Dolores Hydock will share how her storytelling journey has led to some surprising ‘close encounters’ with Alabama’s Legendary storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Dr. Ruth,” Bray said. “Her stories of these encounters are as unpredictable and magical as the flight of a June bug”
Tickets for June Buggin’ at the We Piddle Around Theater are $20 and include preshow music, the luncheon and the performance by award-winning storyteller Dolores Hydock.
