Police Memorial Day today

Members of the Troy Police Department were present for the signing of the proclamation declaring May 15 through May 21 Police Week in Troy. Troy Mayor Jason A. Reeves expressed personal appreciation to the officers for their dedication to the community and their commitment to serving others. Today, May 18 is Police Memorial Day in Troy. Ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. at the Troy Police Department Memorial and immediately following at Bicentennial Park.

By city proclamation, Troy Mayor Jason A. Reeves has declared the week of May 15 through May 21, 2016, Police Week and May 18 Police Memorial Day in Troy.

The community is invited to participate in the Thirty-Eighth Annual Police Memorial Day ceremonies at 10 a.m. today at the Troy Police Department Memorial and immediately following at Bicentennial Park

The Police Memorial Day Ceremonies will be held in memory of “Fallen Brothers who made the Supreme Sacrifices so others could live in Peace.”

Troy Police Department officers to be honored are: Will G. Jackson, Troy Police Department, June 3, 1905; Hayden Youngblood, May 22, 1962; Cecil Sullivan, Nov. 12, 1967; Billy Dease, Jan. 15, 1968; and Steve Watkins, Nov. 26, 1981.

State Trooper R.W. “Bob” Jones, Nov. 3, 1991; and Conservation Officer Grady R. Jackson, Feb. 12, 1984, will also be honored at the ceremony at Bicentennial Park.

Reeves said there are about 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Troy Police Department.

“The members of the Troy Police Department play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Troy,” Reeves said. “It is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards and sacrifices of the Troy Police Department. The officers of the Troy Police Department recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence and disorder and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression.”

Reeves encourages all patriotic, civic and educational organizations to participate in ceremonies and services honoring law enforcement officers, past and present.

“By their faithful and loyal devotion to their responsibilities, they have rendered a dedicated service to their communities,” he said. “By doing so, they established for themselves an enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens.”
