Walter L. McCrary

Walter L. McCrary, 85, of Cuthbert passed away on December 23, 2015 in Magnolia Manor in Americus. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 28, 2015 in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville with Dr. Peter Vermullen officiating.

 

Mr. McCrary was born on January 2, 1930 in Americus, GA. After graduating from Americus High School, he earned a degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Georgia Southwestern College. After serving as Office Manager of King Milling Co. and Farmers Bonded Warehouse for 12 years, he began a 50-year career in community banking. After terms with Citizens Bank in Americus and Citizens Bank in Cuthbert, GA, he was named Charter President, CEO and Director of Sumter County Bank in Americus. He then served as President of First State Bank of Randolph County in Cuthbert, where he became Chairman of the Board of Directors and later Chairman Emeritus. His banking career also included a degree from School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University as well as serving on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Bankers Association, Independent Bankers Association of Georgia and the Georgia Higher Education Assistance Corporation. He proudly served his country with a 20-year service term in the Georgia National Guard, retiring as Major in 1968. He served his community as a member of the Americus City Council, President of Americus Country Club, President of Cuthbert-Randolph Chamber of Commerce, and Treasurer of Cuthbert United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed photography and at one time held a private pilot’s license in aviation. Most importantly, He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter McCrary, Sr. and Izola McCrary.

Survivors include his wife, Faye, 2 sons, Collin (Connie) and Carson (Lori), grandsons, Ryan, Griffin and Parker, and sisters, Helen Coleman, Carolyn Wicker and Shirley Williams. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made on behalf of the Cuthbert United Methodist Church at P. O. Box 449 Cuthbert, GA 39840.
