Cole Labrant and his mother, Sheri, are off an “adventure” that will likely take them around the world.

Cole, a social media celebrity and Troy University student, and his mother are participating in Season 28 of The Amazing Race, a CBS reality show that sends teams around the world in a series of physical and mental challenges.

The family, who now live in Enterprise, are former Troy residents and dad Ken Labrant is a professor at Troy University.

“It’s been a mile a minute with that kid,” Ken said on Wednesday. “Right now, they’re out in L.A. and in a couple of days they’ll be heading off to the first leg of The Amazing Race.”

The mother-son duo is one of 11 teams competing in the upcoming season, which begins filming this weekend. Contestants for the season include a wide range of social media stars. “There are You Tubers, Vine stars, Instagrammers … some have a couple million follows, there’s Cole who has 8 million followers, and some have more,” Ken said.

The family was contacted about the competition earlier this summer and underwent a lengthy audition process. “We weren’t sure if Cole would be matched with me, his brother or his mom,” Ken said. “It turns out he matched best with his mom.

“I’m happy for her. She’s been busy raising six kids and she hasn’t had an opportunity like this.”

The race will be filmed during about 25 days and teams have been known to travel all around the world, from Australia to South America to Denmark to Africa.

“You could be Bali for all you know,” he said. “This one episode (of a previous season) had teams bungee jumping in a gorge some place in Africa.”

And are the Labrants up to that?

“The least afraid would be Sheri,” Ken said. “The most afraid would be Cole. Of course, he’s afraid of heights. He had to tell the producers what his fears are, and he told them he was afraid of heights and being chased by beautiful girls. He’s hoping they follow through with both.”

Ken said he will have limited contact with Cole and Sheri during the filming, and the pair could be gone until mid-December. “We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Information about Season 28 of The Amazing Race as well as bios on the competing teams can be found at the CBS website: www.cbs.com/shows/amazing_race. The kickoff of the first leg of the show will begin streaming live at 9:30 p.m. Central time on Facebook.
