Dorothy Helms “Dot” Laney, age 86 of Brundidge died Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at her home. Dot was born August 26,1929 to Hobbie Howell Helms and Sue Lee Helms of Elba, Alabama . She attended and graduated from Huntington College and Troy State University completing her Master’s Degree after raising her two children. After her teaching career she became heavily involved with the Town of Brundidge, Alabama. She was a leader in the Brundidge Historical Society and was Instrumental in starting the We Piddle Around Theater of Brundidge and also worked with the Brundidge Peanut Butter Festival. She was a 60 plus year member of the Brundidge United Methodist Church and was a leader of the We Care program at the church.
A Celebration of Dot’s life will be held Sunday, November 15, 2015 at 3:00 PM from the Brundidge United Methodist Church with Reverend Ed Shirley and Reverend Jimmy Spikes officiating. Visitation will also be held at the church from 1:30- 3:00 PM Sunday. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Wright, her Sunday school class and the Girls of Wilma’s Beauty Shop in Troy.
Survivors include her children, Donna Hogan of Brundidge, Stark (Kathy) Laney of Dothan, her grandchildren, Missy Hogan of Lebanon, KY., John Hogan of Troy, Bill Laney of Troy, 2 Sisters and Brother in law, Martha Sue Williams of Lake Jackson, TX, Ann and Dewey Harden of Chipley, FL., she was also survived by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Dot was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William Stark Laney Sr., and a son Charlie Laney.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Brundidge United Methodist Church Building Fund, or the We Care Fund , 140 N. Main Street, Brundidge, Alabama,36010.
