As football teams all around the county plan to “square off” on the gridirons in the coming weeks, the City of Troy Public Relations and Tourism Department will kick-off the 2015 football season on the square in downtown Troy on Thursday, Aug. 27.

Shelia Jackson, public relations/tourism director, said “On the Square” is a community-wide kickoff to the city high school and university football seasons and an opportunity for the fans to “show their colors.”

“Last year’s football meet and greet on The Square was a great success, and we expect this year’s event to be just as great,” Jackson said. “Fans will have an opportunity to meet head football coaches, Neal Brown of Troy University, Brad McCoy of Charles Henderson High School and Gene Allen of Pike Liberal Arts School.

“The coaches will have posters to autograph and their football schedules to hand out. I’m sure they won’t mind to have a photograph or two taken.”

The emcee for the On the Square Brown Bag Lunch will be Tonya Terry, anchor of WSFA-12’s “Today in Alabama” and “Alabama Live!”

“We are proud to have Tonya emcee the Brown Bag,” Jackson said. “She enjoys being back home in Troy, and she brings celebrity status to any event she attends.”

Little Jimmy Reed and DJ Hendock will be the featured entertainment for the event.

“They are both back by popular demand,” Jackson said. “Little Jimmy Reed is an outstanding blues singer and Henry Everett is one of the best disc jockeys around. They’ll have people up on their feet.”

The Brown Bag “Countdown to Kickoff Meet and Greet” will be from noon until 1 p.m. on Aug. 27. Lunch will be free and there will be loads of great door prizes.

Everyone is encouraged to make plans to attend.
