After postponing the annual fireworks show from Saturday to Sunday, the City of Troy is boasting approximately 1,000 attendees, which does not count those who viewed the fireworks show outside of Veterans Memorial Sunday.

Weather delays didn’t deter the crowds from turning out for the City of Troy’s Fourth of July fireworks show a day late.

The show, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed until Sunday due to weather. Troy Parks and Recreation Director Dan Smith said he had received an overwhelming amount of positive comments following Sunday’s event despite the rain delay.

“Originally we were hoping that the rain would move through on Saturday and we could still do the show, but the company that shoots our fireworks gave us several reasons as to why they advised against it,” Smith said. “At the top of the list were safety concerns. Immediately, we knew we had no other choice but to cancel Saturday’s show.”

Saturday’s bad weather turned into a cool breeze and clear sky on Sunday, though, Smith said. “Sunday evening, however, the weather was beautiful,” Smith said. “There was a light breeze and clear skies.”

Smith said he was astounded at the amount of people who still attended the fireworks show both inside and outside Veterans Memorial Stadium.

“The attendance inside the stadium and outside the stadium were honestly much more than I expected,” Smith said. “I’ve talked to a number of people that did see the show and they were very happy and pleased with the fireworks.”

Smith said he estimated there were at least 1,000 people who sat in the stadium to view the show, but the largest crowd was outside the stadium with people watching the fireworks in their favorite places.

“From what I could see from the press box, there were lights, people and vehicles in every direction outside of the stadium,” Smith said. “I’ve talked to people who were watching the show from all over Pike County. Typically, 95 percent of the people who view the show do not come inside the stadium.”
