The Pilot Club of Troy donated $1,000 to the Troy Recreation Center Friday in order to purchase a picnic table for the Miracle League Playground. The Pilot Club participates with the Miracle League Field and the Miracle League Playground and donates often.

“The Pilot Club of Troy has been one of the leaders of the Troy Miracle League, the Troy Miracle League Field and the Miracle League Playground,” said Dan Smith, Troy Parks and Recreation director. “They have just been very generous in their support and their resources.”

The Pilot Club’s main focus is to teach children and adults the importance of protecting their brain.

Tracey Davis, Pilot Club president said they got the idea to sponsor a picnic table after coming to the playground to have a picnic themselves.

“We came out here for a Spring Fling and we noticed that they don’t have a picnic table, so that’s why we decided to give the money for that,” Davis said. “I think it will be a good thing. If we had a picnic table when we had our picnic out here, it would have just been a little bit better because we would have had a place to sit. We had blankets, but I think the playground would benefit from a picnic table.”

Smith agrees with Davis about the benefits of a picnic table.

“Having this park here at the recreation center is a work in progress,” Smith said. “The playground is extremely popular. We are fortunate to have benches with shade and now by adding a picnic table, hopefully this will be the first of many, the families that do eat lunch out here quite often can use them.”

The Pilot Club also purchased a memorial stone for Darrell Yancey. The stones are placed under trees planted around the playground. There are 16 trees currently surrounding the playground.

“We do a memorial if any pilot, spouse or child passes away,” said Carolyn Barron, Pilot Club treasurer. “We have chosen to put memorial stones with their name on it by the pilot club of Troy. This one is for Darrell Yancey.”
