Irons leaving CHHS baseball program

Derek Irons led the CHHS Trojans to two state championships during his tenure as head coach. He announced Wednesday that he has accepted an offer to coach at class 7A Oak Mountain High School in Shelby County.

 

Derek Irons told players early Wednesday that he has accepted a head coaching position at Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham. The Shelby County Schools board of education is expected to finalize the contract on Monday.

The accomplishments of Irons since arriving at CHHS include Class 4A state championships in 2013 and 2014, including records of 40-3 in 2013, 41-10 in 2014 and 35-4 in 2015.

 

During Irons’ tenure, the Trojans were ranked nationally in four separate services, advanced to the quarterfinals or beyond six times in the last seven seasons and made 17 consecutive playoff appearances.

 

Since 2007, CHHS has been ranked in the top 10 in every ASWA poll and was ranked No. 1 in the state for the first time ever in the history of the school’s program multiple times while Irons was the head coach.

 

Irons replaces Brian Breeze, who coached the class 7A Oak Mountain Eagles from 2011-2015.
