Flanked by members of the Troy Police Department, Troy Mayor Jason A. Reeves signed a proclamation Monday declaring the week of May 10 through May 16, Police Week in Troy and Friday, May 15 as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.
Reeves told the police officers in attendance that he never puts his head down at night without thinking of them and thanking them.
“What you do is greatly appreciated,” he said. “There’s not a day that you are not in my thoughts. I appreciate you. Our community appreciates you.”
Reeves said there are about 900,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States including the dedicated members of the Troy Police Department, who play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Troy.
“It is important for all citizens to know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards and sacrifices of the Troy Police Department,” Reeves said. “It is also important that the officers of the Troy Police Department recognize their duty to serve the people.”
Reeves said the TPD’s duty to serve the people includes safeguarding life and property, protecting the city’s citizens against violence and disorder and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression.
“Police memorial week is very dear to hearts due to the fact that we have five officers that are listed on the Roll Call of Honor that have given their life in the protection of their community,” said Lt. Brian Weed with the Troy Police Department. “We should never forget what they have done and given, not only their sacrifice but for the sacrifice of their family. We appreciate Troy Mayor Jason Reeves and the Troy City Council for recognizing this week and recognizing the service that the men and women give this department and their appreciation for their quality of work they do day in and day out. It means a lot to us, as well to the families of those five men that have given the ultimate sacrifice.”
Reeves encouraged the citizens of Troy to be aware of the ceremonies this week that recognize police officers, past and present, for their dedication and loyalty to their community.
“These officers have established a reputation for preserving the rights and security of all our citizens,” he said. “This is a time set aside for us to honor them for their service and I encourage our citizens to do so.”
