All the molding and making and throwing and baking has been done. Now, it’s time to fill those Empty Bowls.
The Pike County Salvation Army’s annual Empty Bowls Luncheon will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday at the Bush Memorial Baptist Church Family Life Center. Everyone is invited to be a part of this annual fundraising event that is designed to feed the hungry in Pike County.
For a donation of $20, those who attend the luncheon will select a handmade “empty bowl” to take home and then fill a bowl with a large selection of homemade soups, stews and chilies. The luncheon will also include dessert, breads and beverages.
Kim May, local Salvation Army Service Center director, said nearly 200 bowls have been made and donated to the annual fundraiser.
“We have really unique bowls to choose from and bowls of different sizes,” she said.
The “soup” bowls were made by Larry Percy’s pottery class at Troy University, the Colley Senior Complex Clay Class and students from Pike County High School, Pike Liberal Arts and Global Studies. The Junior Ambassadors at the Pike County Chamber of Commerce also made bowls.
“We also have several celebrity bowls that will be on the silent auction table,” May said.
“A bowl that is expected to attract a lot of bids is one signed by Alabama head football coach, Nick Saban.”
Other celebrity bowls were made by Mary Ann Casey, Larry Percy, Charles Adams, Walter Black, Drew Black, Day Barnes, Greg Aman, Scott Swindall, Jeannie Swindall, Margaret Barber and Lynn Koning.
“We also have bowls signed by the storytellers at the 2015 Pike Piddlers Storytelling Festival, Donald Davis, Barbara McBride-Smith, Josh Goforth and Tim Lowry,” May said.
A special event of the 2015 Empty Bowls Luncheon will be “The Potter’s Sermon” by the Rev. Greg Aman at noon.
“Greg Aman is an experienced potter,” May said. “He has ‘thrown’ pots for more than 40 years. God has laid ‘The Potter’s Sermon’ on his heart, and he will share it with us.
“We are excited about this year’s Empty Bowls Luncheon and hope that everyone will join us for this very important fundraising event. Truly, there are people in our community who go to bed hungry at night due to circumstances beyond their control. Many of them are children and the elderly. They need the services that the Salvation Army provides.”
