FUND RUN: TJWL holds memorial 5K run to raise funds

On Saturday, children ran in the Shep Sprint, in memory of Shep Pugh, who was killed in a vehicle accident 2011, along with his mother, Brittany. Men and women also ran a 5K and a one-mile run. The money raised during the runs goes toward a scholarship that will be given to two female students attending Pike County Schools.
The Troy Junior Women’s League hosted its fourth annual Brittany Shepard Pugh Memorial 5K Run and Shep Sprint Fun Run on Saturday.
“We had a good turnout,” said Erikka Knight, chairman of the race. “I think everything went smoothly with the route. We didn’t have any problems.”
According to Knight, 97 people ran in the 5K, while 103 were registered. She said between 20 and 30 participants ran in the one mile run and 55 ran in the Shep Sprint, which involves participants between the ages of 1-4.
The final count of funds raised has not been determined yet, as they are still counting.
“We hopefully will have that within the next two weeks,” Knight said. The money raised from the run will go toward a scholarship that will be awarded to two graduating female seniors from Pike County schools.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 15. The female senior applicants must have a 3.3 GPA or higher, write an essay and submit a letter of recommendation.
The funds raised will also help fund other projects and charitable entities such as Troy Public Library, area schools, the Child Advocacy Center, Relay for Life and more.
The race honors the memory of Brittany Pugh and her son, Shep, who were killed in a vehicle accident in 2011. Proceeds fund TJWL projects and scholarships. “It will always mean a lot to us because she was on of our own and it will also mean a lot to her family”
Knight said that the TJWL might look into changing the run to a 10K to make the event different and more appealing in upcoming years.
“Runs are really popular,” Knight said. “A lot of our members do 5Ks and are active.”
