The Charles Henderson High School drama and theater department needs old or abandoned band instruments for its upcoming production of “Band Geeks.”

Judith Park, drama and theater instructor, said she and her students are reaching out to the community in an effort to borrow band instruments that have been taken out of service.

“We need band instruments of all kinds to be used as props for the CHHS production of the musical ‘Band Geeks’ on May 1 and 2,” Park said. “We feel sure there are a lot of band instruments that are stored in closets or storage buildings and not being used. We have a good use for them.”

The instruments don’t have to be in good working condition and don’t even have to have all the parts.

“We’re not going to play the instruments so it won’t matter if they can’t be played,” Park said. “For band props, we need two trumpets, a flute and a snare drum with a harness. The script also includes a tuba and a saxophone. We could use any other band instruments – clarinets, baritones, percussion instruments, even a triangle to strike.”

The CHHS drama and theater students are hoping members of the community will be willing to loan their old instruments so they can strike up the band in fine fashion for their production of “Band Geeks.”

“Troy University has produced ‘Band Geeks’ and we are excited to bring it to the stage at Charles Henderson High School,” Park said.

“The musical is the work Tommy Newman, who is a professor of music at Troy University. He will collaborate with us on our production.”

Park said Troy University’s drama and theater department will make some of the costumes used in its production of “Band Geeks” available to the CHHS production.

“We held auditions for the musical Monday and we’ll have between 25 and 30 students involved,” Park said. “We just need band instruments to ‘play.’”
