Troy men’s tennis opens season

The Troy men’s tennis team opens its 2015 season this weekend with three matches in Florida, including two matches against ranked teams.

Friday afternoon, the Trojans took on No. 13 Florida at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Troy will play a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. when they face Florida A&M, followed by a match against No. 35 Florida State.

Under second-year head coach Scott Kidd, Troy will return three key players to their 2015 squad, including All-Sun Belt performers in Gabriel Dias and Daniel Bustamante.

Dias enters the spring season ranked No. 12 in the ITA Southern Region singles rankings. In the fall season, Dias won the C.L. Varner Memorial also advanced to the third round at the ITA Southern Regional.

Bustamante had a successful fall of his own, as he advanced to the pre-qualifying finals of the ITA Men’s All-American Championships. In the process, Bustamante defeated opponents from UTSA, Valparaiso and Wake Forest. In the finals, he lost to a North Carolina player.

The Trojans will welcome eight newcomers to their 2015 roster, including Giovani Samaha who enjoyed a strong fall season for Troy.

Samaha will enter the spring season ranked eighth in the ITA Southern Region doubles rankings along with returner Pablo Moreno.
