American Legion Post 70 in Troy will host a Christmas Day lunch at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Post home at 212 East Walnut Street in Troy.

“The Christmas Day lunch is not just for veterans. It’s for anyone and everyone who will be spending Christmas Day alone or for those who are unable to afford an old-fashioned Christmas dinner,” said Elaine McLeod, past Post commander. “We, at Post 70, don’t want anyone to eat alone on Christmas Day. There’s nothing sadder than having to eat alone on Christmas Day. The lunch is for everyone that might find themselves in that situation.”

McLeod said the menu for the Christmas Day luncheon will include turkey, ham, dressing, cranberry sauce, English peas, corn casserole and copper pennies.

“Of course, no Christmas dinner is complete without a dessert,” she said. “We’ll have pies and other desserts to top off the meal.”

Those who participate in the Christmas Day lunch will be invited to stay and enjoy the fellowship that always surrounds a holiday meal.

“This is the first Christmas Day lunch Post 70 has hosted so we don’t know what the response will be,” McLeod said. “We hosted a Thanksgiving lunch for our veterans and those that would have to spend that holiday alone. We had about 26 for Thanksgiving dinner. The food was great and so was the fellowship.”

McLeod said Post 70 hosts the Thanksgiving and Christmas day lunches in an effort to make the holidays special.

“We hope those who would otherwise spend Christmas alone will accept our invitation to join us for a special Christmas Day lunch and that they will receive a blessing from it,” she said.

American Legion Post 70 and its Auxiliary are active in the community and continue to serve the citizens of Pike County.
