Two students were charged Friday with stealing packages from porches throughout Troy.
Troy Police Officers recently received calls about delivery packages being taken off front porches. On Thursday, officers took two suspects into custody and on Friday formally charged both 19-year-old men with receiving stolen property.
According Lt. Bryan Weed, the suspects are both Troy University students and although they are charged with felonies they will have the opportunity to appeal for youthful offender status.
“They were both charged with receiving stolen property second degree,” Weed said. “One of them has also been charged with receiving stolen property third degree and that bond is $500. That was from the stolen handgun from Montgomery that was recovered.”
Weed said the university had been notified of the arrests.
After receiving several reports about stolen packages, Weed said the police department had acted upon several search warrants and recovered numerous stolen items, including some that had yet to be reported.
Weed said the police department had received several more reports Friday of people missing or never receiving property.
“We’ve taken three or four reports today of folks who have seen the coverage in the media and are going back and checked they had packages that have been delivered or are missing,” Weed said. “We’re still trying to put property with victims.”
With the amount of property recovered from one suspect’s apartment, Weed said the police department is still requesting people be aware of their surroundings and aware of where any of their packages may have be in transit to their house.
“We’re still getting reports and getting property to victims,” Weed said. “Once again, we’re asking folks to check on packages they may be receiving or supposed to be receiving to make sure we don’t have them.”
