The makeover of the water tank in downtown Troy continues this week as an updated logo for the tank has been selected.

“The standpipe water tank is not only a historical monument, but a useful part of the city of Troy’s water distribution system,” Troy Utilities Assistant General Manager Mike Davis said. “With the new logo and tank painting we believe that it will match the renovations that have taken place and will take place in the downtown Square area.”

The standpipe water tank was erected in the early 1900s. The last time the tank was painted was 1997.

“We are excited to see the finished project sometime in November,” Davis said.

The last time the tank was painted, there was an issue of over spray of paint from the tower getting on cars in the surrounding areas. Davis said due to a new painting technique this project should not have a similar problem. “The stand pipe is completely sealed and spray can no longer get out,” Davis said. “The tank is wrapped horizontally and completely enclosed so there should not be any over spray on this project.”

Davis said prevention of over spray was one reason why the area around the tank was closed, a portion of West Walnut Street between South Three Notch and Oak Streets. “There’s not a lot of area under the tank and we needed more room to set equipment up to do the work and also for liability and safety purposes,” Davis said.
