Good news was circulated Wednesday that will be of great interest to pet owners.

The entry deadline for the Humane Society of Pike County’s 2015 Pet Photo Contest has been extended through Monday, Sept. 8.

Lisa Howard, contest chair, said the humane society’s website was flooded Tuesday with entries and some of the entries did not go through while others missed the original 5 p.m. deadline.

“Hopefully, I’ve contacted all of those who entries didn’t load or those whose entries did make the deadline due to a glitch in the website,” Howard said. “But, just to make sure and to accommodate all those who called requesting an extension of the deadline, we are extending the deadline through Monday. Any entry postmarked Sept. 8 will be accepted.”

Although the entry deadline has been extended, the deadline for voting in the 2015 Pet Photo Contest will remain Sept. 30.

“That’s firm,” Howard said. “If we extended that deadline, we couldn’t get the 2015 Pet Photo Calendars back in time for Christmas.”

Howard said, as of Wednesday, dogs are leading the entries by a rather comfortable margin.

“Cats usually rule the Pet Photo Contest but right now dog entries are outnumbering the cats’,” Howard said. “Last year, a dog won the contest for the first time ever. Dog owners have said they are going to make it two in a row.”

And, for the first time ever, a couple of draft mules are entered in the contest.

“The mules have added a lot of interest to the contest and might give the dogs and cats a real stiff challenge,” Howard said. “From what I’ve heard, several ducks are waiting in the wings. So it should be an interesting and fun run to the cover of the 2015 Pet Photo Calendar.

Howard said the Humane Society of Pike County’s website was tested Wednesday morning and it’s now operational. The web address is pikehumane.org.

To enter on site, drop an 8×10 pet photo, an entry form with the owner’s name, address and phone number and the pet’s name and a $10 donation to the Humane Society of Pike County at The Little Framery, Troy Antiques or Guynn’s Income Tax and Bookkeeping Services in Troy or Hillside Antiques on Highway 231 South.

Entries and votes may also be mailed to Pet Photo Contest, P.O. Box 296, Troy, AL 36081.
