Brundidge to install security cameras

For about six decades, people had a lot of fun laughing at others who were caught on “Candid Camera,” which was, perhaps, television’s first reality show.

“Smile, you’re on Candid Camera” quickly became the most useful show slogan ever. Whenever someone was caught, unexpectedly, on camera the phrase, “Smile, you’re on Candid Camera” would bring immediate laughter.

But, it’s highly unlikely that anyone who is caught on camera in Brundidge will be smiling.

The City is in the process of installing recording cameras at various locations around the city and anyone could get “caught on camera” at any time.

Britt Thomas, city manager, said safety of the citizens is the purpose of the cameras. No one is being targeted.

“Several cameras have been installed and we are in the process of installing others,” Thomas said. “The safety of our citizens is always a concern.”

The downtown intersection where Main Street and the Highway 10 corridor cross is a high traffic are with heavy truck traffic from U.S. Highway 231 and state highways 93 and 10.

“We’ve had several incidents where the big truck ran over our lamp posts,” Thomas said. “If the trucks don’t stop, then the city has to pick up the cost of the repairs.”

The 18-wheelers have also done damage to buildings in the downtown area.

“Now, if the trucks don’t stop and report the damage, we have it on camera,” Thomas said. He added that the cameras should be a deterrent to crime, traffic violations, vandalism and littering.

Thomas said the cameras are high quality and will be able to pick up the front and back of vehicles.

“The cameras are connected to a recording device and we’ll have film footage available from all cameras,” he said. “The technology for these cameras is very good and we’ll have clear images.”

Thomas said the City is not attempting to keep the cameras a secret.

“They are for the safety of our citizens,” he said.
