Mother Nature postpones CHHS 7-on-7 tourney

Charles Henderson head coach Brad McCoy watched the skies all morning and didn’t like what he saw. When the bottom fell out around noon, he made the decision to push back the Wiregrass 7-on-7 Tournament.

The tournament was set to be played on the Troy University campus Thursday afternoon, but scattered strong thunderstorms forced McCoy to postpone the event to next week.

“It came such a monsoon about lunchtime today that I made the decision to move it to next week,” McCoy said. “I didn’t want all those teams to have drive in bad weather and then get here and have to dodge rain and lightning all afternoon.”

The tournament, which features local high school teams from a variety of Alabama High School Athletic Association classifications, has been moved to July 17 at 2:30 p.m.

Dothan, Northview, Greenville, Headland, Elba, Ariton, Andalusia and Geneva County, along with other local teams, were set to take part in the event. Despite the rescheduling, McCoy expects most of the teams to make the trek to Troy next week.

“There are a couple of teams that may not come next week due to some other scheduling issues,” McCoy. “But for the most part, we think that most of everyone that was coming this week will come next week. It will be a good field of teams.”

The tournament will be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium and the adjacent intramural fields. Admission is free.
