Raymond Sexton has seen the installation of thousands of flags during his career spanning 18 years in the Grounds Department of the City of Troy. The supervisor oversees the flags being put up for five holidays a year: Flag Day, Independence Day, 9/11, Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.

Each of the 380 flags that are presented through the 4th of July weekend are in memory of a Veteran through a partnership with the American Legion.

Sexton said putting the flags out on each holiday brings him great pride, and it’s one of the highlights of his duties as supervisor.

“It’s not a chore,” Sexton said. “We take big pride in it. People enjoy the flags and they mean a lot to them”

The flag display at Bicentennial Park brings people from near and far to enjoy the patriotic spirit. Because of the park’s proximity to U.S. Highway 231, many people not from the area stop to see it, Sexton said.

“We have a lot of people that pull of the highway and take pictures and all kinds of stuff,” Sexton said. “People even call us and ask when the flags are going out, even blow horns at us when we are installing them. They love to see the flags.”
