Students receive  Winnie Lee Memorial Scholarships

The Pike County Cattlewomen awarded scholarships to five young women who have exhibited excellence in academics and commitment to service at the association’s 32nd annual banquet Saturday night.

Tammy Powell, Cattlewomen co-president, said the Cattlewomen were extremely pleased to award Winnie Lee Memorial Scholarships to April Garrett, Hillary Goodson, Morgan Graham, Kate Johnson and Kailee Taylor.

“We usually award from one to four scholarships but we had five young women who were equally deserving of these scholarships,” Powell said. “The Winnie Lee Memorial Scholarships are unique in that the recipients do not have to be awarded to incoming college freshmen.”

Garrett is a graduate of Pike Liberal Arts School and will begin her second year at Troy University in the fall.

Zion Chapel High School graduate, Goodson will enter Troy University as a freshman in the fall.

Graham, a graduate of Pike Liberal Arts School, will begin her second year at Troy University at summer’s end.

Johnson has completed three years at Troy University and will transfer to Auburn University for 2014-15. She is a graduate of Charles Henderson High School.

Taylor graduated from Pike Liberal Arts School in May and will attend the University of Alabama in the fall.

Powell said the Winnie Lee Memorial Scholarships are based on academics, extra curricular activities and community service. To qualify for one of these scholarships, an applicant must have participated in 4-H or FFA for at least three years.

“Winnie Lee was a longtime member of the Pike County Cattlewomen,” Powell said. “She was a strong supporter of education and believed in young people and was dedicated to them. We knew that it would greatly please her to have a scholarship established in her honor.

Winnie and her husband, the late Harold Lee, lived in the Oak Grove community. They were farmers and were active supporters of the beef industry and committed supporters of youth.”

The Cattlewomen have several fundraisers in support of the Winnie Lee Memorial Scholarships, including a booth at the Peanut Butter Festival in Brundidge, the sale of beef loins and a silent auction at the Pike County Cattlemen’s annual meeting.

Powell said donations to the Cattlewomen also support the annual Winnie Lee Memorial Scholarships.
