With eight years under its belt, Bush Memorial Baptist Church knows how to increase the fun factor in vacation bible school.
And, when the nontraditional elements are added, the result is Camp Troy.
This will be the ninth year Bush Memorial has hosted Camp Troy and all boys and girls from kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to attend.
Marshall LeCroy, Bush Memorial family pastor, said Camp Troy is basically an extended vacation bible school.
Camp Troy will be from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. June 16 through 20 at Bush Memorial at 605 George Wallace Drive in Troy.
“From 9 until 11:30 a.m., we’ll have traditional vacation bible school,” LeCroy said. “Then, we’ll have lunch with camp activities following until 3 p.m. The campers will participate in both team and individual sports and other activities depending on age and gender.”
The campers will chose from a variety of team sports including soccer, basketball, football and volleyball. Individual sports will include archery, fishing, ultimate Frisbee and dodge ball.
“Most of the camp activities will be at Bush but we’ll have some activities at the Sportsplex and fishing will also be off campus,” LeCroy said. “The camp will also offer creative activities such as sewing, cooking, pottery making and dancing. The cultural activities will be led by several Troy University international students.”
The camp fee is $8 and includes a camp T-shirt, lunch and an afternoon snack.
Registration may be made online at camptroy.com or by calling the Bush Memorial church office at 334-566-4141.
LeCroy said Camp Troy is a way to reach out to the young people of the community. And, for those who don’t have a home church, it is a way to encourage them to participate in the faith-based programs and activities offered at Bush throughout the year.
Last year 160 youngsters participated in Camp Troy. LeCroy said he would like to see that number increase in the summer of 2014.
