The Troy Tiger Sharks swim team is having a meet on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Troy Recreation Center on Enzor Road.
Joining the Tiger Sharks in the water are teams from Dothan, Eufaula and Andalusia.
“My goals for the first meet of the year are just to gauge our performance, see what we need to work on,” said Shane Tatum, Tiger Sharks head coach. “So far we’ve just been practicing the fundamentals.”
Troy’s lineup features 47 swimmers, which is small compared to other, yearlong programs.
“Numbers wise, we are the smallest, but not that far behind. Andalusia will have about 60. Conditioning wise, we aren’t really where we need to be,” Tatum said. “Teams that swim all year long have an advantage on us at the state of the summer. We usually don’t get to where we need to be, in terms of conditioning until July. So we will have to see where things fall this weekend.”
The meet is the first of the season, and kicks off a busy stretch for the Tiger Sharks.
Following Friday’s meet, Troy will travel to Andalusia on June 6. Following an off week, the Tiger Sharks will return home to the friendly confines of the Troy Recreation Center for another meet.
While the team will be in the water quite a bit over the next month, Tatum likes having the early season meets close to home.
“With so many younger kids on the team, I didn’t want to travel as much,” Tatum said. “We have four teams in our district, so we will see the same competition every time out. We want to swim in our pool as much as possible.”
The meet gets underway at 6 p.m. Friday at the Troy Recreation Center.
