Music, tales on tap for June Buggin’

As if Carmen Agra Deedy wasn’t enough, add the Americana music of Tori Lee Averett to the mix and there’ll be more June Buggin’ at the We Piddle Around Theater on June 12 than the law allows.
Averett didn’t come on board the Brundidge Historical Society’s annual June Buggin’ event, she jumped on board.
Averett is a strong supporter of the art of storytelling and she’s a super fan of nationally acclaimed storyteller Carmen Deedy. The two of them worked together at Georgia College and Averett is in awe of the talents of the Cuban-born storyteller.
“I’ve heard Carmen Deedy at different venues, some educational and some for people who just enjoy storytelling,” Averett said. “Carmen Deedy is an exceptional storyteller. She’s entertaining from start to finish and you’re never ready for her to finish.
“She is one of the funniest people I’ve ever been around. And her stories can be as heart-warming as they are funny. You’ll take Carmen Deedy’s stories home with you.”
Averett said what strikes her most about Carmen Agra Deedy is that she is real.
“She doesn’t put on. She’s real,” Averett said. “She is a collector of stories that relate to people of all ages and from all walks of life.
And, for those who have never attended a storytelling event, this is the one. It’s worth it to see Carmen Deedy. She is the whole package. Whether it’s your first time or your hundredth time, you’ll be well entertained.”
Averett, too, is the whole package when it comes to music.
She has performed at studio 116 in downtown Brundidge as a solo performer and with her band Mayview Road.
“Tori is a very talented musician,” said Sara Dismukes, studio 116 co-director. “She is a singer and songwriter and plays keyboard and guitar. The songs that she writes reflect her experiences growing up in the rural South. I love to hear her sing.”
June Buggin’ at the We Piddle Around Theater is at noon on Thursday, June 12. Tickets are $20 each and include the pre-show music and a made-from-scratch lunch with dessert. “Then, sit back and savor the stories of Carmen Agra Deedy.”

For tickets, call (334) 685-5524, (334) 372-1001 or (334) 670-6302. Tickets are available at The Messenger.
