Nationally-acclaimed storyteller Carmen Agra Deedy will return to the stage of the We Piddle Around Theater but this time she’ll be June Buggin’ around.
Deedy will be the featured teller at the Brundidge Historical Society’s annual June Buggin’ event at noon on Thursday, June 12 at the We Piddle Around Theater.
“Carmen Deedy is one of the top storytellers in the country and one of the most sought after,” said Lawrence Bowden, BHS president. “She was a featured teller at our 2009 Pike Piddlers Storytelling Festival and we have wanted to have her back but this is the first opportunity we’ve had. We are extremely proud to have Carmen Deedy back at the We Piddle Around Theater.”
As a storyteller, Deedy has performed across the United States and Canada including the Disney Institute, the Kennedy Center and all major storytelling festivals. She is a return teller at the prestigious Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in Orem, Utah and the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
Deedy is an award-winning author and has contributed to National Public Radio’s “Weekend All Things Considered.”
“Carmen Deedy is one of the top storytellers in the country because she is one of the most entertaining,” said Cathie Steed, a member of the BHS storytelling committee. “She is high energy. When she takes the stage, she takes off and takes the audience along with her. She’s got a wit so sharp, as someone said, you can shave with it.”
Deedy was born in Havana, Cuba and migrated to the United States with her family in 1963 after the Cuban Revolution.
“Carmen Deedy tells hilarious and heartwarming stories of growing up Cuban in Decatur, Georgia,” Steed said.
“And those are just a few of the really great stories in her bag of many that we can all relate to – especially those about her mama.”
Steed said the annual June Buggin’ event is so named because it’s as unpredictable and magical as the flight of a June bug.
“Carmen Deedy’s performance will have a uniqueness and a magic of it’s own,” Steed said. “There’s no better way to do lunch than June Buggin’ at the We Piddle Around Theater.”
Tickets for June Buggin’ at the We Piddle Around Theater are $20 each and include the pre-show music, a made-from-scratch lunch with dessert. “Then, sit back and savor the stories of Carmen Agra Deedy.”
