Charles Henderson rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to knock off the Goshen Eagles 8-5 in the first round of the knockout portion of the Trojan Classic at the Troy Sportsplex.
The Lady Trojans rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at four. The teams played a score-less fifth inning, forcing an international tie-breaker.
Charles Henderson used a couple of hit batters and some Goshen errors to take an 8-4 lead. Charles Henderson pitcher Molly Kate Sanders handcuffed the Lady Eagles in the bottom of the sixth and got a fly out to center to end the game, and seal the win.
“I think it is important that we stayed resilient,” said Charles Henderson head coach Trent Givens. “We took some punches early, but stayed in there and fought back. These girls showed that and played hard. They are getting tired of hearing the ‘You’re young’ stuff, so they are growing up more and more each day. They took a big step today.”
Tucker Earles and Ally Stamey led the Trojans with two runs scored each, Emma Kirkpatrick, Samantha Yarbrough and Lakin Turner all scored once.
Theodore 16, Charles Henderson 0: For the second day in a row, the Charles Henderson Lady Trojans fell victim to the strong pitching of Theodore pitcher Devin Brown.
Brown struck out nine of the 10 batters she faced, and did not give up a hit for the second consecutive game. The Bobcats scored two in the first on a homer to center by Brown, and then exploded in the second and third innings to put the game away.
Theodore scored four runs in the second and plated 10 in the third to end the game.
With the loss, Charles Henderson is eliminated from the Trojan Classic. The Lady Trojans will return to action on Tuesday at home against Northview.
