Saxophones highlight Founder’s Day program

On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 23, at 2:30, the Troy Music Study Club presented its Founder’s Day concert in the Sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church. The concert featured Raymond H. Smith, professor of Saxophone at Troy University.

Lyndia Smith, president of Troy Music Study Club, welcomed members and guests and led the Federation Collect. The Federation Hymn was sung led by William Denison and accompanied by Lyra Crapps at the piano.

Program coordinator, John Jinright, introduced the guest Raymond Smith. Smith joined the Troy University faculty in the fall of 1990. He is a graduate of Troy University and the University of South Florida with degrees in music education and performance. He is an active soloist, recitalist, clinician and adjudicator. Currently Smith is Professor of Woodwinds, Director of Troy University Concert Band and a member of Troy University Graduate Teaching Faculty.

Mr. Smith opened the concert program with “Sonata XIII, Adagio and Allegra” by G.F. Handel/Smith followed by “Sonata, Opus 10 for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Paul Creston. Jinright accompanied him at the piano for both pieces. Jinright (piano), James W. Smith (bass) and Dr. Brian Nozny (percussion) joined Smith on the third selection: “Tango Etudes” by Astro Piazzolla, adapted for today’s performance February 2014. For the last two selections Smith was joined by three Troy University students: Chris Helms, Senior Music Education Major, Rad Bolt, Senior Music Education Major, and Chase McKoy, Freshmen Music Education Major. The Saxophone Quartet played “Spring” from the Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi/Holcombe and “American Suite” for Saxophone Quartet by Ralph Martino. Smith introduced each of the selections stating that his students were the inspiration for today’s program.

Following the program a reception hosted by the Music Club, Troy Arts Council and the Troy Arts Council Auxiliary was held in the Round Room.

As the second oldest club in Alabama, Troy Music Study Club is affiliated with the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs.
