Turner throws no-no, Calhoun tosses perfect game in pair of wins for CHHS
Charles Henderson head coach Trent Givens wanted his team to work its defensive fielding in a double header against Bullock County Thursday night.
But pitchers Lakin Turner and Hannah Calhoun had other ideas.
Turner tossed a no-hitter in game one of the double header, and Calhoun did one better and threw a two-inning perfect game, as Charles Henderson rolled to 16-1 and 17-0 wins.
Turner went three innings, striking out 5 and walking three in her no-no. Calhoun struck out four of the six outs she faces in game two.
“They did a great job throwing strikes,” Givens said. “Hannah was very consistent, and I am very proud of her being a seventh grader and stepping up in the first area game of the year. Lakin walked a couple of batters, but responded well and came back and threw strikes to get outs.”
While the Lady Trojan pitchers handled their business in the circle, the Trojan batters had a field day at the plate.
Charles Henderson started the day by sending 13 batters to the plate in the first inning of game one, and scoring seven runs. Lindsey Fox picked up the first hit in the new softball complex with a single up the middle.
Addyson Bryan picked the first RBI on a double down the right field line.
Charles Henderson kept the momentum going in the second inning by scoring seven more runs, with Bryan once again doubling in a run.
Samantha Yarbrough hit a triple to left center to bring home Nelsey Leverette, Emma Kirkpatrick and Abbie Barron.
In the second game, the Lady Trojans sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning, and scored 12 runs.
Bryan continued her hot day with another double, and picked up three more RBIs.
Yarbough brought home three runs with a single, and Molly Kate Sanders doubled in three more in the second.
Givens liked the timely hitting of the Lady Trojans.
“It is something that we have been focusing on,” said Givens. “We have been blanked the last couple of games, and the girls took it on themselves to get some extra work in at the plate. They swung at good pitches, and made the most of their at-bats.”
Charles Henderson will take some momentum in to the weekend, as they host the Trojan Classic at the Troy Sportsplex.
The Lady Trojans will open the tournament on Friday at 6:30 P.m. against the Theodore Lady Bobcats.
Givens feels the added momentum is good for his young team.
“They got to have fun tonight, and we got all of our girls in the ball game,” said Givens. “We have Theodore next, and that is where of focus is. We have to get ready for tomorrow.”
