With a quick swipe of a pen Thursday morning, Hunter Baggett became the sixth member of the 2013 Charles Henderson state championship team to seal their future.
Baggett put pen to paper with Southern Union State Community College, and will join former Trojan stars Joey Denison and Tripp Blackmon in Opelika.
“It’s a place (SUSCC) where I felt really at home,” said Baggett. “I feel it is a good fit for myself, and can’t wait to play for them next year.”
Baggett, Charles Henderson’s leadoff man and everyday shortstop, earned All-State honors during CHHS’ title season.
Charles Henderson head coach Derek Irons said he has seen Baggett’s confidence grow on a daily basis.
“It’s a thing that all younger players go throw,” Irons said. “They get out here and the filed kind of swallows them up a little bit. Hunter comes to the field every day to get better, and I couldn’t be more proud of him, and the job he has done.”
Baggett feels he will stay at shortstop at the next level, but did say he could play second or “anywhere in the middle” they wanted him.
Baggett ended the day by popping his first varsity homerun in the first game of a blowout double header against Slocomb.
He said it was the perfect end to a great day.
“Today is definitely a day I will remember forever,” Baggett said with a smile.
