Herbert Leon Hilyer
Herbert Leon Hilyer, age 86, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014 in Birmingham, Alabama. Funeral services for Mr. Hilyer will be Friday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Troy, AL., with Rev. Steve Winton officiating. The Hilyer family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 12–2pm on Friday. A private committal service will be held at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Hilyer retired as the president and chairman of the board of Regions Bank in Troy, AL. Before starting at Regions Bank, he was a teacher and head basketball coach at Troy High School. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Troy for more than 50 years where he held numerous lay person positions and taught the Wesley McCartha Men’s Sunday School Class for numerous years. He was a dedicated and loyal civil servant in the city of Troy, holding many officer positions in several organizations within the city and county. He was a former City of Troy Man of the Year. He was a two-sport letterman at Troy State Teachers College in both basketball and baseball and later played AA league baseball for the New York Giants organization. He was an avid fan of all sports, especially at Auburn University, Troy University and the Atlanta Braves. He was also a veteran of the United States Armed Forces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hilyer and two brothers, Kenneth and Earl Hilyer.
He is survived by his two daughters, Leigh Isbell (Hal) and Amy Gaskin (Jimmy), and five sisters; Mary Esther McCart, Ruth Ann Powers, Lois Gresham, Jean McGlamry and Carolyn Helms. He is also survived by his five grandchildren; Emily Gaskin, Mary Beasley Gaskin, Christi Jordan (Jonathan), Hal and Hilyer Isbell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as honorary pallbearers for the service will be the Wesley McCartha Sunday School Class at First United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the First United Methodist Church or to your favorite charity.
