The improvement of the Goshen girls basketball team has been nothing short of incredible. The Lady Eagles played well, but fell to Zion Chapel 39-35 in overtime Thursday night in Jack.
Goshen needed a big shot to force overtime, and it got one.
Kiki Howard drained a three from the wing at the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied at 29.
The Eagles couldn’t get the ball in the bucket in the extra period, and the Lady Rebels were able to sink timely free throws down the stretch.
Despite the loss, Goshen head coach Johnny Mitchell liked what he saw from his team.
“I can’t be upset with the way the girls played tonight,” said Mitchell. “We got beaten pretty badly by Zion Chapel earlier in the season, so to force overtime and have a chance to win it is a good night. They played hard.”
Goshen was down two, 36-34, with 39 seconds to go in overtime and got a steal. However, the Lady Eagles couldn’t get the ball to fall on three different lay up attempts on the possession, and the Rebels cleared the ball out to kill the advance.
Mitchell feels the Lady Eagles would have been in position to win if a couple of early shots would’ve fallen.
“We didn’t shoot well from the free throw line, and missed some shots on goal as well,” Mitchell said. “There were a few shots in regulation that rolled around the rim, or that were half way down and popped out. We will keep clawing and keep working to get this program where it needs to be.”
