The Charles Henderson girls basketball team will have a little extra swagger Friday night at Betty Wagoner Hall.
The Lady Trojans will play a game as a ranked team for the first time in a few seasons, as Charles Henderson moved up to the No. 10-spot in the most recent Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.
Henderson is 12-2 on the season, and meets Bullock County on Friday night. Bullock County handed the Lady Trojans one of their two losses earlier in the season, a 41-36 setback Union Springs on January 10.
Charles Henderson head coach Dyneshia Jones knows that Friday’s match up is a big one for her Lady Trojans.
“I know, and the girls know, how important Friday’s game is,” Jones said. “We know that we have to win that game to have a chance to win the area tournament. It’s up for us to do it.”
With a win over Bullock County, the Lady Trojans and Hornets would tie for the best area record. The tiebreaker, and host site for the area tournament, would be decided by a flip of a coin.
“We know what is at stake, and we want to host the area tournament,” Jones said. “We like to play in our gym because of the fans, the atmosphere and not having to travel. We are playing for that coin flip. We know we have to win Friday, or it doesn’t matter.”
As for a strategy for the proposed coin flip, Jones said it all comes down to the time of day.
“I was always told you call heads during the day, and tails at night,” said Jones with a laugh. “We will see what happens.”
