New exhibit addresses women’s issues through humor

Using about two dozen sock monkeys, artist Libby Rowe illustrated every expecting mother’s fears. Her take on motherhood is one of many aspects of womanhood the artist tackles in “Pink,” now on display at Troy University’s Malone Gallery of Fine Arts.

Greg Skaggs, director of the exhibit, said “Pink” is a fun show.

“It’s kind of funny. It’s very clever,” he said. “When you look at it, you get a chuckle. Libby’s got a great sense of humor.”

Fifteen of Rowe’s pieces are included in the show. Skaggs said the works include video, assemblage, photography and, of course, sock monkeys.

The exhibit opened this week and will be on display through Feb. 14. Rowe will visit the university Feb. 12 and 13. Skaggs said the art department would have a reception for her Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m.

“There’ll be food,” he said.

Troy celebrated a second opening this week. A Troy collaborative studio show opened at Wiregrass Museum in Dothan Thursday.

The show includes the works of nine students, many close to graduating. The school partners with Wiregrass and the Johnson Art Center to give art students an opportunity to exhibit their works in a gallery.

“It’s huge. It gives them an opportunity to show in an actual, professional gallery with standards that have to be approved by a board. It’s jurored and you’re showing it to the public,” Skaggs said. “Students get a sense of accomplishment and professionalism. It takes it to a higher order.”

Both shows are free and open to the public. For more information about either exhibit, contact Malone Hall of Fine Arts at 670-3391.
