Female Factor to cover bone health

When Female Factor started more than two years ago, organizers never expected it would grow as large or as fast as it has.

“It’s just grown beyond our wildest hopes,” said Karen Herring, one of the organizers. “It started with 50 attending. Now, our record crowd has been 150 women.”

The monthly program focuses on the unique health concerns of women. Wednesday’s session at The Studio in downtown Troy will cover good bone health.

“I love the fact that 100-plus women can gather in a room, enjoy a good lunch, fellowship and maybe take some pertinent info back with them when they’re done,” Herring said. “This is for anybody, from 21 to 121.”

Teresa Law, a nurse practitioner, and Rachel Green, a physical therapist, are associated with Troy Regional Medical Center’s Restore Therapy Services. Law will provide tips on healthy bones and joints while Green will share stretching exercises.

Herring said the subject fit perfectly with this year’s Female Factor program.

“We always have a little theme and the theme for this year is ‘Straighten up,’” she said.

The Female Factor’s advisory board comes schedules programs six months in advance. Herring said this month’s subject would also tie into New Year’s resolutions.

“We all have our resolutions for the new year. So, we were hoping to provide some helpful tips that would help you keep them … Only about seven percent of resolutions are actually kept,” she said.

Because of the growing popularity of Female Factor programs, Herring strongly recommended making a reservation, either by calling her or going online. Each one-hour program includes a free meal.

“It’s only free because of those wonderful sponsors that we’ve had donate monetarily and in kind,” Herring said.

Wednesday’s Female Factor will be at noon in The Studio in downtown Troy. For more information or to make a reservation, call 670-5487 or email femalefactor@troymedicalcenter.com.
