The auditions for the upcoming gospel choir will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sorrell Chapel on the campus of Troy University with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Brandon McClure, who is organizing the countywide gospel choir, said judges for the audition will be professionals in the gospel music industry.
“The organization of the gospel choir is a serious undertaking,” McClure said. “There is a place for a gospel choir in our community. Gospel music is a part of our heritage. People love to sing gospel music and listen to it. We have a wealth of talent in and around Pike County. Put all of that together and you have the makings of a gospel choir.”
The auditions for the gospel choir are open to ages 10 and up who have a good knowledge of music and good singing voices.
“The gospel choir is not a training choir. It’s a performance choir so there will be a time commitment from those who make the choir,” McClure said. “In addition to singers, we will also audition for musicians. We will be looking for those who play keyboard, the organ, drums, electric guitar, and saxophone. Anyone who plays an instrument is encouraged to attend the audition.”
The choir will be made up of 15 to 30 members, depending on the amount of interest and quality of the talent.
McClure has been singing gospel music since he was three years old. His love of gospel music motivated him to organize a gospel choir.
“The gospel choir will be an opportunity to meet new people and travel to fun and interesting places,” he said. “I believe the time is right to bring together those of us who love gospel music and want to share that love with others.”
