Pike County suffocates G.W. Long in win

Pike County used its patented press defense to smother the G.W. Long Rebels in the consolation game of the Goshen Holiday Tournament and picked up a 52-35 win.
The Bulldogs led by eight points at the half, but used their quickness early and often in the third quarter to open the lead up. Pike County outscored the Rebels 19-9 in the third stanza to leave G.W. Long in the dust for good.
“We were so flat Thursday night, but I still think Samson was the better team that night,” said Doug Holland, Pike County head coach. “We came back the last two days and got back on track with wins. I can’t really complain because we got wins, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
No Pike County lit up the scoreboard, but each of the Bulldogs contributed in a different way. Deshon Cowling led Pike County with 12 points and Kamari Jackson dropped in 10 more.
Holland likes the selflessness of his team.
“I feel like any of the guys can have big nights at any point and time,” said Holland. “Deshon, Jerell (Lawson), Stevie (Smiley) and all the guys have the skills to do it. None of them are selfish, and all they want to do is win.”
