Ground has been broken for the new Family Dollar store planned for Brundidge.

Ground has been broken for the Family Dollar Store that will be constructed on S.A. Graham Blvd. in Brundidge.

The land is being cleared for the 8,320-square foot metal and steel building that will house the Family Dollar general merchandise discount store.

Mike Johnston, project supervisor for Garrard Group of Duluth, Ga., said the building will have a split-face front, which is rough-finished cinder blocks.

“There will be 39 parking spaces, which is the number required for the size of building, and that has been approved by the City,” he said. “The building should be up by March and open in about four months.”

The Family Dollar Store will be located next to Dollar General, also a general merchandise discount store.

Johnston said that he has seen the two discount stores across the street from each other and down the street from each other but not next door to each other.

“It could be done somewhere but I haven’t seen it,” he said. “But, they know what they are doing.”

Britt Thomas, Brundidge city manager, said the Family Dollar will provide new jobs for the city with the possibility of increased sales tax.

“And, there’s always increased utility usage with a new business,” Thomas said. “So this should be positive for everybody.”

Thomas said that he has no idea what impact the Family Dollar Store will have on Dollar General, “but we’re fixing to find out.”

The debris that is being removed from the site will be put in a gulley on city property in exchange for the dirt that is removed when the site is leveled.

“The city always needs dirt,” Thomas said. “This is a good exchange for the city.”
