Sears in Troy is partnering with the National Volunteer Fire Council and the Pike County Volunteer Fire Fighters’ Association to raise funds for local volunteer fire departments.

Through Sears’ Salute to Local Heroes program, patrons can buy a Craftsman Bottle Cap Wrench for $10. Of that $10, two dollars will be donated to local volunteer fire departments. The Craftsman Bottle Cap Wrench normally retails for $20.

Chris Schubert, the owner of the Troy Sears store, explained the deal. “We’re partnering with the local fire departments,” Schubert said. “Once people come in and buy the bottle opener, two dollars gets donated to the fire departments. People are encouraged to make further donations. Of those donations, 100 percent will go to the fire departments. I’m not making any money on it.”

Helping local fire departments holds a special meaning for Schubert. “I have a son-in-law who is a firefighter in Miami-Dade,” Schubert said. “Volunteer firefighters don’t get paid, and they risk their lives. They are the bravest people I’ve ever seen. If you live out in a trailer and have a fire, you’re going to be mighty glad to see them riding up.”

Schubert said the bottle opener had been a big hit in years past with husbands and fathers. “Guys love them,” Schubert said. “They’re heavy and sturdy. All you have to do is use the opener, and the cap pops right off. They are the most popular bottle opener that we have at the store.”

Schubert hinted the bottle opener might make a good Christmas gift. “It makes a good stocking stuffer for any guy on your Christmas list,” Schubert said. “It’s a guy thing. I know girls like to give gifts to their guys during the holidays.”

More than anything, buying a bottle opener is an easy way to give back to the community. “Come by your Troy Sears store and pick up one of these heavy, solid, chrome steel bottle openers,” Schubert said. “Cap off the holidays with the great feeling that you’ve supported your local fire fighting heroes.”

The bottle openers can be purchased in-store at the Troy Sears store. The bottle openers are being sold for $10.
