Music study club celebrates with sacred music

The Troy Music Study Club met Monday night, Oct. 28, 2013 at 7 in Banks with Jean Barr and June Kendrick as hosts. President Lyndia Dew called the meeting to order and led the Federation Collect. The club member sang the Federation Hymn and the October song from “Together We Sing,” directed by William Denison and accompanied by Angie Roling. Betty Chancellor gave the background of October’s song, “Back Home in Indiana” by Ballard MacDonald and James F. Hanley. Music in Poetry chairperson, June Kendrick read the poem” Home to Roost” by American poet Kay Ryan.

During the business session reports were given by club officers and committee chairmen. Corrections were made for two of the club meetings. November meeting will be a week earlier on November the 18. The March meeting will be a week later on March 31. A report of the Fall Board Meeting of the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs which met in September was given by Betty Spann who with Jerry Spann attended in Bessemer. Troy Club was the recipient of Awards of Merit from the National Federation for outstanding participation in National Music Week and for Club Yearbook. Both the Troy Messenger and WTBF Radio also received Awards of Merit for Special Participation in National Music Week. Troy Music Study Club, organized in 1905 was also honored by NFMC on 108 years of celebration American Music and Musicians. The 2014 AFMC convention held in April will meet in Montgomery with Montgomery Music Club and Troy Music Study Club as hosts. A discussion was held about what part Troy’s Club will have.

The following announcements were made: Troy University Concert Chorale Fall Concert, Bush Memorial Baptist Church Nov.19 at 7:30 p.m. and Opera Workshop Nov. 22 at 7:30 and Nov. 23 at 2:30 in Crosby Theatre, Smith Hall.

Program coordinator, Betty Spann introduced the following Sacred Music program:

1. “When in Our Music God is Glorified” (AFMC President’s Song) words, F.Pratt Green and Music, Charles V. Stanford which was sung by club members, 2.” The Old Rugged Cross,” Words and Music by George Bernard, Arranged by Cindy Berry. Narration by Jim Roling and Piano arrangement played by Angie Roling. 3. “Eternal Father Song to Save,” Words by William Whiting and Music by John Dykes (Melita tune) was sung by club members, 4. “The Solid Rock,” Words by Edward Mote and Music, John Dykes (Melita tune) Vocal Duet, Soprano, Betty Spann and Tenor Jerry Spann. 5. “ Worthy of Worship” Words, Terry York and Music, Mark Blankenship. 6. Come Thou Almighty King,” Words anonymous and Music Felice de Giardini. 7.” Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken” Words, John Newton and Music Franz Joseph Hayden. Hymns 5-7 were sung by club members and accompanied by William Denison. 8. Anthem “ Hear the Voice and Prayer” by John Larkin was sung by club members, directed and accompanied by William Denison, 9. Anthem “ Oh, Come Let us sing Unto the Lord” by Lloyd Larson and J.P. Williams” was sung by club members, Directed by Amanda Ford and accompanied by William Denison. 10. “The Gift of Song” NFMC Benediction by Lana Bailey, was sung by club members, accompanied by William Denison.

A social hour was enjoyed following the program. Troy Music Study Club is a member of Alabama Federation of Music Clubs and National Federation of Music Clubs.
