The 24th season of Alabama’s Official Folklife Play, “Come Home, It’s Suppertime,” opens tonight at the We Piddle Around Theater in Brundidge.
The original folklife play is set in the Great Depression era and tells stories that are part of the cultural heritage of the rural South.
“The cast and crew number about 50 and we’re all looking forward to another season of ‘Come Home,’” said Les Jackson, play committee chair. “We’ve made a few changes in the script and we have several new cast members that are enthusiastic and bring added energy to the play.”
Jackson said that it’s always amazing the difference a few changes in the script and in the music make in the play.
“We’ve been doing our folklife play for 12 years now and we have a lot of people who come back again and again,” he said. “At dress rehearsal Tuesday night, several people remarked about the new scenes and how much they enjoyed them. What was interesting is that they aren’t new scenes. We’re just doing them in a different way.
“There are a lot of different scenes and it’s difficult to absorb all the stories in just one seating.”
Jackson said the play is filled with laughter but it also takes a hard look at the reality of life during the Great Depression.
“If people had not been able to look at life and find the humor in it, surviving the Depression would have been even more difficult,” he said. “The play is entertaining; the atmosphere is unique; the music is great and the food alone will bring you back.”
“Come Home, It’s Suppertime” received the Governor’s 2008 Tourism Award.
“We take pride in that recognition and dedicate ourselves each season to living up to the award,” Jackson said.
The 2013 fall season of “Come Home, It’s Suppertime” is sold out. The spring production will be the first two weeks in April.
