The Pike County Relay for Life board of directors is looking for volunteers who have a passion for Relay.

Kay Franklin, ACS community representative, said that Relayers, cancer survivors, community leaders, team captains and hard workers are all needed to assist the American Cancer Society Relay for Life campaign.

The first volunteer committee meeting for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be at 5:30 tonight at Troy Regional Medical Center. Those who are interesting in volunteering with the local Relay committee are encouraged to attend.

“The purpose of tonight’s meeting is to begin planning the event designed to raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer,” Franklin said. “Relay for Life is a unique fundraising event that allows participants from all walks of life to join together in the fight against cancer.”

Patients, medical support staff, corporations, civic organizations, churches and community volunteers are all encouraged to join the fight.

Franklin said the Pike County community has long been supportive of Relay for Life and she believes that there are those who would like to be more involved in this very worthwhile fundraising effort.

“Of course, we all know that Relay for Life is a team event where participants gather at the Troy Sportsplex Soccer Field to show their support and dedication,” Franklin said. “Right now, volunteers from the Pike County community are needed to begin planning for this event.

“Relay for Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fundraiser. Individuals who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event make a commitment to fight back against this disease and let the community know that we can beat cancer.”

Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community support and underwrite, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment and lend their support in various other ways.

Anyone who would like to join the Pike County Relay for Life campaign as a volunteer or team participant is encouraged to attend tonight’s meeting at TRMC or call 334-566-2140 for more information.
