Local teams move up in ASWA poll

The Charles Henderson Trojans jumped from fifth to a tie for second in the latest edition of the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.
Charles Henderson, fresh off a 34-21, come-from-behind win over Bayside Academy on Friday, currently sit tied with defending 4A state champion UMS-Wright.
UMS-Wright began the season as the No. 1 team in 4A, but fell to 6A powerhouse McGill-Toolen 49-35 in the first week of the season. Calera moves in to the top spot, following a 69-0 shallacking of Holt in week one.
Beauregard, Charles Henderson’s week-two opponent, is ranked seventh.
For the first time in several years, the Pike County Bulldogs made an appearance in the rankings release.
The Bulldogs didn’t make the top 10 in the first regular-season edition of the poll, but did pull in five votes from sports writers from across the state of Alabama.
Madison Academy, the pre-season 3A No. 1, picked up all 29 first place votes.
In the AISA rankings, Pike Liberal Arts picked up 32 votes despite getting shutout by Morgan Academy 49-0 in week one of the regular season.
In fact, the Patriots secured 11 more votes than the Senators.
Three-time defending AISA A champion Edgewood Academy leads the pack currently, collecting 25 of the 29 first place nods. Lee-Scott, Pike’s opponent on Friday, secured 37 votes.
