Less than a week ago, the Charles Henderson Lady Trojan volleyball team loaded up on a bus and made the short trip over to Goshen to open the season.
The opening match of the year didn’t go any way close to the way head coach Jennifer Sikes had hope, with the Lady Trojans falling in a three-set sweep 25-18, 25-8 and 25-11.
Sikes said her team got back to the basics over the last week trying to fix the issues from the season opener.
“We came in the very next day and got back to work,” Sikes said. “Our serves were our biggest thing we needed to work on. I have preached to them and preached to them. We have got get our serves in.”
Sikes took some of the younger varsity players to a junior varsity match over the weekend in order to get them more “game play” experience.
Over the last week, the varsity and JV have been practicing with the Charles Henderson Middle School freshman team, something that Sikes feels will help.
“That freshman group is kind of like the group of seniors I had last season,” Sikes said. “They have played together for a while, and know where each other is going to be. They are a tough bunch that has helped us tremendously.”
Charles Henderson picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday afternoon against Ariton.
Sikes feels that the getting the first win of the season will help the team build confidence.
“The first win is always the hardest to get, no matter what sport you play,” Sikes said. “They now know what it takes to win, and have to be willing to give complete effort every time out.”
Charles Henderson and Goshen meet Thursday afternoon at Betty Wagoner Hall on the campus of CHHS in Troy.
The junior high teams kick off the action at 4 P.m.
Following the junior high games are JV and varsity matches.
