The Pike County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the destruction and damage of about a dozen mailboxes in Pike County.
“We’ve just recently interviewed a suspect and he has confessed, so we are now waiting on the property owners to determine a course of action,” said Sheriff Russell Thomas.
Eleven mailboxes were reported to have been run over by a vehicle in the areas of Banks and Monticello over the weekend.
“There was part of a headlight found at a residence where a mailbox was damaged,” Thomas said. “No one witnessed anything, and that was the only evidence we had to go on.”
Thomas said the partial headlight was used to develop information on a possible vehicle used in the crimes.
“It was very good work in a very timely manner by the deputies who put everything together,” Thomas said, noting that the suspect lives on the opposite side of the county from the crime scenes.
Mailboxes were damaged and destroyed in the same way in the Shellhorn community the weekend of Aug. 17, but Thomas said there isn’t enough evidence to tie those crimes to the suspect in custody.
The name of the suspect was not released because he had not been formally charged Monday afternoon.
