Take advantage of tax-free shopping days

As we officially turn the corner on summer and welcome August, thoughts are beginning to drift ahead to the return of school days.
And this weekend, Pike Countians once again can get ready for those school days and save a little money along the way.
The eighth annual Back-to-School sales tax holiday takes place this weekend. From 12:01 a.m. Friday through midnight Sunday, shoppers can purchase school supplies, computers and clothing free of state (and local) sales and use tax.
Under the state guidelines, any clothing under $100; school supplies under $50; books under $30; and computers/computer equipment under $750 are exempt from taxes.
Savvy retailers know this is a prime opportunity for parents seeking to maximize their back-to-school dollars. And shoppers should expect to see plenty of sales relating to the holiday, added inventory and assistance from store clerks helping you understand what does – and what doesn’t – qualify for the sales tax exemption.
We encourage all Pike County residents to take advantage of this tax-free weekend, whether you’re stocking up for your own childrern or simply want to help provide school supplies for the hundreds of needy children throughout out county each year by donating to one of the ongoing school supply fundraisers.
It’s not often our government gives us a break on taxes, so we are wise to take advantage of the opportunity.
Happy shopping!
