Yard sale scheduled to benefit scholarships

Area residents will be able to stock up on Troy University gear and other interesting finds while helping to fund scholarships at a yard sale hosted by the Troy University Alumni Association on Aug. 3.
“We were cleaning out our old shed to add on to it and found some old TSU paraphernalia that a lot of people collect,” said Faith Ward, director of Alumni Affairs. “We are going to be selling some of those things and old decorations – things that we can’t, or don’t use anymore.”
And other people with items to sell have the chance to get in on the action. Anyone looking to sell their wares can reserve a space to include a table for $20 by calling the Alumni Affairs office at 670-3318.
All the money will go toward providing scholarships to future Trojans.
Ward said new Alumni President Jerry Williams has been very focused on raising money for that purpose.
“I firmly believe that Troy offers one of the best college experiences in this entire nation,” Williams said. “And I just think it is a tragedy if one student who wants to come to Troy is not able to do that because of financial limitations.”
The Alumni Association funds seven new scholarships each year and if receiving students keep their grades up, they retain those scholarships for four years. Any incoming student is able to apply for the scholarships through the university admissions office.
“Essentially, we are giving out 28 scholarships each year,” Ward said.
Ward said Jan Sullivan, known for selling Troy jewelry, will have a both and there will also be upscale home decor and baby items for sale.
“I think there will be all different sorts of items. Something for everyone,” Ward said.
The event will run from 7 a.m. until noon. Anyone interested in reserving a booth space should call the Alumni Affairs office by Aug. 1.
